THE SEASON
Saturday
19 March, 8pm
Townsville Civic Theatre
John Hopkins OBE - Conductor
Jason Xanthoudakis - Saxaphone
This
concert will have you thinking of bucolic landscapes as the Orchestra
plays Beethoven's Pastorale Symphony. The stillness of the second
movement is only broken with the delicate call of the cuckoo.
The first half features the winner of the 2004 North Queensland Concerto
and Vocal Competition, Saxaphone player Jason Xanthoudakis in a concerto
from Russian-born composer Glazunov.
The venerable John Hopkins will conduct this opening concert celebrating
our fifth anniversary. The evening will be testimony to the fine calibre
of musicianship residing in our City.
Sunday
29 May, 4pm
Southbank Convention Centre
Richard
McIntyre OAM - Conductor
Spend
a lazy Sunday afternoon listening to music that will transport you to
the northern hemisphere. Imagine the sun glistening across the azure
waters of the Mediterranean as you hear Skalkottas' Greek dances. See in
your mind's eye olive trees swaying gently in the breeze as the
Orchestra plays Capriccio Italienne .
Taste the flavour of Spain with Capriccio Espagnole and excerpts
from The Three Cornered Hat from Spanish composer Manuel de Falla.
Richard McIntyre makes a welcome return to Townsville to conduct this
concert. Don't miss Mediterranean Postcards - a tantalising
musical journey.

Hopkins OBE - Conductor
To
celebrate this milestone, past winners and adjudicators have been
invited to perform with the Barrier Reef Orchestra.
You will have the pleasure of seeing some of our favourite NQ artists
such as Baritone, Peter Axford (winner 1994), Soprano, Susan Grinsell
(winner 1990) and pianist Ryan Daniel (winner 1993) performing
well-known arias and duets and Beethoven Piano Concerto No.1
respectively. They will be joined by Sydney violinist Marianne Broadfoot
(winner 2003) playing the heart-renderingly beautiful Bruch Violin
Concerto and Michael O'Brien, from Brisbane with the very popular and
much-loved Greig Piano Concerto.
The Competition was founded by Dr Bill Williams OBE in 1980 and is now
highly regarded. |
